Senior Manager, Manufacturing Operations

Location Whitsett, North Carolina, United States

Status Full-Time


The Sr Operations Manager manages a group of direct labor employees within a manufacturing department with the intent of achieving defined goals such as daily and monthly output schedules and quality levels.  Supervises employee work force directly or with the use of leads or supervisors. Accountable for annual budget (materials and labor).  Responsible for the management and continuous improvement of the Production process.

This position reports to the Sr Operations Director.  The Sr Operations Manager is responsible for developing plans to improve productivity and efficiency, measuring progress and results, identifying, and resolving problems to ensure production goals are met, managing resources, and motivating and developing the workforce.

  • Supports internal customers and suppliers through negotiation and mediation of inter-departmental needs.

Staff Development

  • Strives for excellence in department systems, processes, and tools.
  • Identifies critical skills and abilities required for positions within the function and offers opportunities for growth to the staff.  Exposes and involves staff in long-term planning issues and allows for exposure to areas outside their individual daily responsibilities to create depth of knowledge.
  • Provides critical feedback and recognition to employees.
  • Establishes procedures and methods and delegates their implementation to supervisors and other hourly employees.
  • Provides training to achieve maximum productivity and quality.  Cross-training of job functions, waterfall management techniques, general professional development, and corporate knowledge.
  • Communicates and motivates employees in corporate culture and philosophies.
  • Trains employees in quality objectives and techniques.  Develop, implement, and monitor the results of quality in keeping with company objectives.
  • Serves as an in-house trainer on selected topics.

Resource Management

  • Ensures accurate cycle counts and inventory accuracy and manages the Fax-ban system.
  • Upgrades tools, equipment, and techniques to maximize productivity, quality, and ergonomics.
  • Controls inventories to a JIT (just-in-time) level.  Enforces HVM rules and guidelines.
  • Budgets for capital equipment.  Research options to ensure best cost/quality decision.
  • Establishes and maintains operations budget - controls costs, reviews department spending, implements cost reduction strategies.
  • Maintains and improves standard times to ensure efficient operation.
  • Forecasts planning for material, manpower, and peak capacity needs.
  • Meets production schedules by minimizing line down times.
  • Ensures that all machine changeover times are supporting practices.
  • Records and tracks useful data and analyzes trends. Communicates and directs production accordingly.
  • Meets completion dates and budgets for projects.
  • Appraises via cost and price in-house vs. out-of-house processes.
  • Interfaces with Manufacturing Engineering to provide safe and efficient machinery and tooling.


  • Assesses work behaviors and work environment to ensure safe working conditions.  
  • Increases safety awareness, supports, and implements safety projects and teams.
  • Effectively communicates the importance of emergency response procedures, good housekeeping.  
  • Develops and implements suitable accident prevention methods and systems.
  • Quickly responds to safety issues and makes ergonomically correct tools, equipment, procedures and information readily available.
  • Complies with all Government and Precor regulations.


  • Provides quality support and initiative to further overall goals and objectives.  Actively pursues continuous improvement and ease of doing business to meet or exceed customer needs.
  • Committed to encouraging the Production team to maintain cutting edge knowledge in manufacturing technology, and to incorporate the knowledge into day-to-day business practices.
  • Identify, quantify, and resolve problems quickly and permanently.
  • Implements and maintains statistical process controls on their operations.


  • Initiates action on staffing decisions. 
  • Authorizes overtime
  • Reviews employee performance and recommends appropriate status and salary changes.
  • Supports the effort to eliminate organizational obstacles to empower employees in the furthering of company and quality objectives.
  • Coach, assesses performance, sets expectations, and objectively deals with unacceptable performance.
  • Forecasts staffing needs and arranges for core and temporary additions.
  • Complies with all labor department regulations re: fair hiring and labor relations. 
  • Performs other duties as assigned.


  • BA Degree in Manufacturing or related field preferred (i.e. Business, Industrial Management, Engineering, Management, Operations).
  • Minimum 10 years’ management experience in a high-volume world class manufacturing operation.  
  • Must have a minimum of 7 years’ experience as an operations manager running a Manufacturing plant in a fast-paced environment.
  • Managed a staff level of over 100 employees on multiple shifts. Seasonal manpower changes requiring an increase and decrease of 50% headcount.
  • Must have significant experience working with Business Metrics, Continuous Improvement driving towards World Class manufacturing best practices
  • Strong safety background required.
  • Excellent communication, presentation, negotiation skills required.
  • Successfully trained teams in a variety of areas including problem solving skills and “Kaizen” type improvement projects.

  • Work with new product development processes


Regularly working in office and manufacturing environments to accomplish stated work objectives.  Work is performed indoors in a heated modern factory space.  Ambient working temperature may range from 55 F – 90 F, depending on season.  Work area is clean and free from wet, slippery conditions.  Employees are required to wear personal protective equipment such as safety glasses, safety shoes, hearing protection and gloves.

Light physical effort in an office environment.  Some lifting of parts / products may be required in the manufacturing areas.  Precor enforces a 40 lb lifting restriction.
